Botanical art workshops

  • Ann’s bright, spacious studio is set in a lovely village in Wiltshire near the medieval market town of Devizes.
  • The studio is equipped with drawing boards, magnifiers, light boxes and a digital microscope plus an over-hand projector and screen for easy viewing of Ann’s demos.
  • The studio looks out onto Ann’s delightful, well stocked, Victorian walled garden with outside seating for lunches.
  • Lunches, coffee, a selection of teas, biscuits and cakes provided. Any special dietary requirements should be noted on the booking form.
  • Workshops for 2018 run from 10am – 4pm. Workshops from March 2019 onwards will run from 10.30am and finish at 3.30pm
  • Seasonal or specific plant material is provided subject to availability and students are encouraged to bring any plant material they would like to work on.

  • Beginners Two-Day Introduction to Coloured Pencil


    • 27th - 28th February 2019 'Beginners Two-Day Introduction to Coloured Pencil'

      Join Ann for this two-day introduction to Botanical Art with coloured pencils

      • Learn about the materials and techniques Ann uses in her work
      • Try out the techniques layering, burnishing and underpainting starting with simple subjects such as single fruits, leaves or simple flowers
      • Ann will guide you throughout with demonstrations
      • An opportunity to learn some of her tips and tricks
      • This workshop gives you a good basis for all of Ann’s other courses and future work with coloured pencil

      If you are staying in the village or nearby Ann usually arranges a meal at The George and Dragon on the evening of the first day of the workshop

    Learn about the materials and techniques Ann uses in her vibrant botanical pictures. Learn how to layer and burnish to achieve smooth colour application and with Ann’s guidance, get started with leaves and simple coloured forms such as tomatoes and plums.

  • Two Day Themed Workshops


    For intermediate students or students who have done the Beginners Two Day Workshop. Workshops run from 10am-4pm.


    • 5th - 6th March 2019 '‘Creative Composition-Pushing the Boundaries''

      Good composition is fundamental to creating impact in your pictures

      • Create impact in the picture space and put the ‘art’ in your botanical portraits
      • Learn how to edit your plant material and make it work for you
      • Start to develop a sense of your own style
      • Create harmony and balance and stop being a ‘plonker’

      This workshop runs from 10am-4pm with a buffet lunch, teas and coffee

    • 30th May 2019 - 1st May 2019 'Natural Objects - 'Focusing on Feathers and Bark'

      30th April – 1st May 2019

      This is a first for me, moving away from the plant kingdom and focusing on feathers

      • Discover ways of depicting the delicacy of feathers and intricate textures of bark with both graphite and coloured pencil.
      • Learn how to use a coloured underpainting as a base for these detailed drawings.
    • 6th - 7th November 2018 '‘It's Nearly Christmas! Cards and Finishing Touches''
      • Create a stunning design to make your Christmas cards stand out from the crowd.
      • Add those final touches to those unfinished pieces, they will make lovely presents

      Please Note that this workshop will run from 10.00am and finish at 3.30 pm to allow for the seasonal gloom and a safer return journey!

    • 26th - 27th June 2019 '‘Creating Contrast with Tonal Values''

      Strong contrasts are fundamental to creating interest in the picture space.

      • Learn to create sparkling highlights
      • Choose the right shade colour to add depth without muddying your colours
      • Make cast shadows work to create added form

      This workshop runs from 10am-4pm with a buffet lunch, teas and coffee
