Botanical art workshops

  • Ann’s bright, spacious studio is set in a lovely village in Wiltshire near the medieval market town of Devizes.
  • The studio is equipped with drawing boards, magnifiers, light boxes and a digital microscope plus an over-hand projector and screen for easy viewing of Ann’s demos.
  • The studio looks out onto Ann’s delightful, well stocked, Victorian walled garden with outside seating for lunches.
  • Lunches, coffee, a selection of teas, biscuits and cakes provided. Any special dietary requirements should be noted on the booking form.
  • Workshops run from 10am – 4pm.
  • Seasonal or specific plant material is provided subject to availability and students are encouraged to bring any plant material they would like to work on.

  • Beginners Two-Day Introduction to Coloured Pencil


    • 17th - 18th July 2018 'Beginners Two-Day Introduction to Coloured Pencil'
      • Learn about the materials and techniques Ann uses in her work
      • Try out the techniques layering, burnishing and underpainting starting with simple subjects such as single fruits, leaves or simple flowers
      • Ann will guide you throughout with demonstrations
      • An opportunity to learn some of her tips and tricks
      • This workshop gives you a good basis for all of Ann’s other courses and future work with coloured pencil

    Learn about the materials and techniques Ann uses in her vibrant botanical pictures. Learn how to layer and burnish to achieve smooth colour application and with Ann’s guidance, get started with leaves and simple coloured forms such as tomatoes and plums.

  • Two Day Themed Workshops


    (for intermediate students or students who have done the Beginners Two Day Workshop)

    • 20th - 21st March 2018 '‘Develop Your Drawing''
      • A chance to really understand the drawing process, improve your drawing skills and get to grips with graphite.
      • Understanding, observing and depicting accurate tonal values is fundamental to produce the perception of form that underpins all botanical work in any medium.
      • Explore with me the rich range of textures and tones that can be created with graphite pencils. I will demonstrate a variety of techniques, tips and tricks to produce tactile textures that will add another dimension to your graphite work.
      • An opportunity to try out underpainting to create a coloured base for graphite work.
    • 24th - 25th April 2018 '‘Tantalizing Tulips''
      • Strong shapes, vibrant colour combinations and fluidity of form make tulips the ideal plant with which to create colourful contemporary compositions.
      • Focus on planning your approach, when and in what order do you use techniques such as resist, embossing, underpainting and blending. Warning, baby oil may be involved!!!
      • Learn to select and layer colours to produce luscious, rich and accurate colour mixes and to choose effective shade colours to give your work depth but keeping the colours vibrant.
      • I will be on hand to demonstrate specific techniques for roots, stamens, bloom and perspective and help you to create a fabulous plant portrait.
    • 23rd - 24th May 2018 '‘Big, Bold and Blousy - Late Spring Blooms''
      • Create a composition with the ‘wow’ factor.
      • Be inspired by the fabulous rich colours and powerful shapes of Peonies, Poppies and Irises
      • A chance to work on a larger scale with guidance and baby oil, perhaps!
      • Ann will guide you through the design process and help you to create really rich, vibrant and textural colour mixes to make your compositions come alive.
    • 19th - 20th June 2018 '‘A Long Look at Leaves''
      • Love them or loath them we need to draw them and they can make or break our plant portraits. Spend two-days with Ann learning to love them, understand them and depict them realistically so they add another dimension to your work.
      • Learn to observe with accuracy and try out a variety of techniques for veins, hairs, textures, highlights and shading.
      • Really get to grips with creating realistic green mixes
      • Persevere with perspective to create truly three-dimensional images
